DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- One Lakewood Police agent is dead after a shooting near West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, Gov. Jared Polis says.
According to officials, four agents and one civilian were involved in the shooting. They say all four Lakewood Police agents were taken to the hospital where one was confirmed deceased. The other three and the civilian are still receiving care.
"Law enforcement put their lives on the line for our safety everyday and I am heartbroken to learn that a Lakewood Police Agent was killed in the line of duty this evening. My heart goes out to their family and friends. My thoughts are also with the three agents who are still receiving care at area hospitals, as well as the civilian who was wounded, and I wish them a full and speedy recovery. Thank you to law enforcement who run into danger to keep us safe and to protect our communities," Gov. Polis said in a press release.
Our Denver news partners report the shooting involved officers on a Regional Transportation District (RTD)bus near the corer of West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. A statement from RTD says the shooting happened on a RTD-contracted operated bus on Route 76 in Lakewood.
9News reports the another bus had gone to pick up passengers of the bus involved in the shooting. 9News video also showed a car crashed into the back of the RTD bus and the scene surrounded by police tape.
Denver Health told 9News they had received multiple patients, and St. Anthony Hospital had received one patient with non-life threatening injuries.
Gov. Polis says Colorado State Patrol is on scene to assist, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is supporting the investigation.
